Bullet Mould of the Month

458-405GC

For the month of May, the mould of the month is the 458-405GC. Jim Allison called this one his "Don't Argue" Design, as most game didn't!

The huge flat meplat of around 80% of the bullet diameter means it performs well above its weight on game, delivering massive energy transfer to the game you are hunting. I've been using this one out of my 450 Ackley Mag recently, at around the 2000fps level, and it has shot very well. Click here to see the target of a group shot at 50m with it while working up loads.

I've recently shot a few feral pigs with this load and bullet, about 90% of the time they have dropped right on the spot, the other times they don't run far, and are easy to track. We haven't recovered a projectile yet as they sail right on through, but do leave a good wound channel.

The alloy I use for all my smokeless loads is like a Lyman #2 alloy, but with a bit more tin added. This bullet come straight from the mould at 390 grains, add a 458 Gator Check at 10 grains and a bit of lube and we are right at 405 grains. Diameter is .459" and a trip through a .459" sizing die to apply lube and it's right to load.

We can make this mould in both single and double cavity. If you're looking for a really effective 458 cal hunting cast bullet, try this one.
